Grave Markers of two of my great grandfathers

 

All over Virginia, behind country churches and in family graveyards, there are markers like these. Here are the weathered headstones of two of my great grandfathers. At the top of each headstone is a circle containing the Cross of Honor, which is a German Cross with a Holly wreath inside.

Left: John D Stepp Company A 20th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery CSA This marker is at a country church in Campbell County, Virginia.

 

Right: Benjamin F Waller Company H 3rd Virginia Cavalry CSA. This marker is in a home cemetery in Halifax County, VA.

 

These great grandfathers were in the march west, towards Appomattox, when Lee retreated from Richmond at the end of the war.
